SOLELY DEPENDING ON THE NATIONAL ELECTRICAL CODE IS FROM IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY, OR APATHY

Save time, money and trouble by understanding just what the National Electrical Code is and what it is not.

The National Electrical Code Article 90 Introduction and 90.1 Scope (A) Practical Safeguarding actually states “The purpose of this Code is the practical safeguarding of persons and property from hazards arising from the use of electricity”.

This means that it is only a safety code period.

To make sure that everyone understands that the National Electrical Code is only a safety code period. The National Electrical Code Article 90 Introduction and 90.1 Scope (B) Adequacy actually states: “This Code contains provisions that are considered necessary for safety. Compliance therewith and proper maintenance result in an installation that is essentially free from hazard but not necessarily efficient, convenient, or adequate for good service or future expansion of electrical use”.

So how can a facility get the electric to be efficient, convenient, and adequate for good service or future expansion of electrical use?

Facility owners/managers must understand the difference between electrical safety, electrical performance and electrical reliability. Other industry accepted standards for electrical performance and electrical reliability must be implemented. Below are a few examples of such standards:

  • American National Standards Institute (ANSI).
  • American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM).
  • Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE).
  • National Electrical Contractors Association (NECA).
  • National Electrical Manufacturers' Association (NEMA).
  • Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM).

Each facility will require different standards to get the electrical performance and electrical reliability required for the equipment within that facility.

When the facility is built, electrical performance and electrical reliability, cost very little to implement.

Because of Ignorance, Stupidity, Or Apathy of what the National Electrical Code really is, and because electrical performance and electrical reliability standards were not implemented in the original built, it can be very damaging to equipment. Managers will question why the same electrical failures continue to occur. Root cause issues must then be found and electrical performance and electrical reliability standards implemented. This is the most time consuming and expensive method.

  • Thanks for sharing this insightful post. It's crucial for everyone to recognize that the National Electrical Code is solely a safety code. Efficient, convenient, and adequate electrical performance requires adherence to industry standards like ANSI, ASTM, IEEE, NECA, NEMA, UL, or FM. Ignorance, stupidity, or apathy can be costly in terms of both time and money. Understanding the distinction between safety and performance is essential for building and maintaining reliable electrical systems.
